Hair & Hygiene Guidelines

Our goal is to find the appropriate balance between supporting students and their individual identities while also defining, instilling, and practicing important habits and life skills.

Haircuts

As a forward-facing community, students should keep their hair out of their eyes to promote attentiveness, engagement, and clear communication. Maintaining an unobstructed view allows for better focus in the classroom and respectful interaction with peers and faculty.

Hair should be kept clean and neat. Cutting or coloring one’s own hair or another student’s hair is not allowed. Students must keep hair out of their eyes (without the use of any device) and be clean shaven. Barbers are available on campus regularly.

Beginning in early October, Cardigan offers on-campus opportunities for student haircuts. The boys may sign up on their own or you can help arrange an appointment for your student by sending a message to Director of Residential Life Life Meredith Frost at mfrost@cardigan.org

The $35 price (no tip required) for an on-campus haircut will be billed to the student account (missed appointments will also be billed.) Lastly, there may be times when we encourage a student to schedule an appointment if he is having trouble keeping his hair neat, clean, and out of his eyes. Please reach out to Meredith Frost if you have any questions.

If there is a concern about a student’s personal health and well-being, a member of the Health Center team, Student Life Office, or other administrator will contact parents to construct an informed and team-based approach. Our health center staff are available for discussion and consultation and personal hygiene products are available in the school store.
