In January, Bochen “Victor” Zhu ’20, reporter for Verbatim, Cardigan’s student newspaper, sat down with Cardigan trustee David Gregory P’18. Mr. Gregory is a political analyst for CNN and author of How’s Your Faith? An Unlikely Personal Journey

How long have you have been a part of the Board of Trustees team? How do you feel about this experience?

My son Max was here in 7th and 8th grade. I think it was toward the end of his 7th or 8th-grade year that I joined the board. It has been a great experience. When he was here, I was able to hear about his experience as a student and bring it to the board. When he left, I was able to think more broadly about the School, the boys, and the mission. I think when you are a parent of a boy who went to Cardigan, you appreciate their experience. For me, what made me really committed is the ability to be a part of the School’s success.

What is the most fun or exciting thing about being a trustee?

I think it is the relationships with faculty members. I can learn from them about the challenges they face. I can also offer support and guidance based on my own experiences and I might be able to help. What I think is really fun too is when your son has a successful experience. It makes me happy to be here to work with people and know my son was happy here. So, I get to be a part of his happiness.

What are some plans for the upcoming year?

One thing coming up that is exciting is the 75th Anniversary of the School. There will be a big gathering for alumni, teachers and I am looking forward to being a part of that. On the board level of things, we are figuring out some important improvements for the school. I am also looking forward to the opening of the Wallach building. This year marked a new beginning of the future. As the board, we think about the future. We are writing new chapters of the plan that will make the school stronger in the future.

What is the best moment you ever had as a member of the Board of Trustees?

I would say my favorite moment is when we had a reception at our house in Washington for new and prospective families. Max wanted to speak about his experience to the group. Listening to him, I felt so good that I want to join the school’s board. Of course, another one was the time when I almost won the heads or tails competition.

Can you tell us about the mission of the Board of Trustees?

As trustees, our responsibility is to try to think about the big picture goals for the school going into the future. Our job is to also support the administration but at the same time question them about policies and practices in place. I am the chair on the committee that is affiliated with school life, but I think my job really is to support the community and to offer guidance to the administration. Most importantly, I am a cheerleader for the administration. I am very passionate about Cardigan. I think it is such a unique place that I want everyone to know about it. Being on a board, I get to play a small role in helping the school be successful in the future. I think my fundamental job is to contribute in numerous ways to making sure that each boy who is here is having the best experience he can have.

Is there anything special that you want to inform our readers?

From the point of view of the board, I think every board member wants to be on the board because we recognize how special Cardigan is. Everything we talk about is for the benefit of the students and their experience here. It seemed like adult topics which might be boring, but we are focusing on letting the students, or you guys, enjoy a better experience.
