Marrion Athletic Center was alive with activity on Saturday, as student-athletes from nine schools joined us on campus for a full day of competition at Cardigan’s Annual Wrestling Tournament. Students from Eaglebrook School, Belmont Hill School, Fay School, Mascoma Indian River Middle School, Plymouth Middle School, Fessenden School, Roxbury Latin School, Newport Middle School, and St. Johnsbury Middle School attended the event.
The competition was fierce and there were few easy matches, but ten of our Cardigan boys made it to the podium to take first, second, or third place, some of which were new to the sport. All 26 boys on our wrestling team competed in multiple matches throughout the tournament, and while the day was long, the spirit of the teams, coaches, parents, and students in attendance remained high.
“It was an awesome day and we got in a lot of wrestling,” said Assistant Coach Hal Gartner. “I saw Diego Escalante ’20 finishing first place for the first time in four years on the team. Taewoo “Terry” Kim ’20 was down 4-1 with ten seconds left in the match, and then surprised us as he came back to win the match 5-4. Jake Marcum ’22 is a first-time wrestler and won 3 out of his 5 matches. Our boys battled every second of every match and it was a lot of fun for the athletes, coaches, and fans.”
Below are the boys who placed during the tournament:
- Diego Escalante ’20 - 1st place
- Michael Brannan ’20 - 2nd place
- Jihyeok “Eric” Hong ’20 - 2nd place
- Jaeyoung “Jay” Hong ’21- 2nd place
- Chengze “Leon” Li ’20 - 3rd place
- David Warder ’21 - 3rd place
- Salvador Rey Kamar Guerra ’20 - 3rd place
- Jake Marcum ’22 - 3rd place
