Every year, Director of Secondary School Counseling Kris Langetieg P’24 and his team, consisting of Cynthia Day P’12,’13 and Kristin LeRoy P’23, guide the Cardigan ninth-graders through the search for the next school in their educational journey. It’s a long, thorough process that begins in the spring of the students’ eighth-grade year.
But this year was a year unlike any other. Because of the pandemic, students could not visit and tour campuses or interview with Admissions officers in person. Instead, interviews were conducted online via Zoom, and families became far more saavy in how they gathered information and made decisions on applications.
Mr. Langetieg knows this process is about finding the right fit for each boy, and that presented a serious challenge this year. How do you determine fit if you cannot visit the schools? “We relied heavily on digital tools, our institutional knowledge of these schools and their communities, and existing relationships with recent Cardigan alumni to help our boys narrow their focus on the right targets,” Mr. Langetieg said. “We are also fortunate to have strong relationships with admissions teams who truly understand Cardigan and value the experience and depth of our graduates.” He was quick to honor the applicants as well. “Of course, all of the credit really goes to the resilient and steadfast Class of 2021. This was the most complicated and competitive application year we may ever encounter, yet our students proved that they deserve to be considered among the best and brightest from around the world because of their commitment to community and resolve to face challenges.”
After a year of virtual visits, applications, acceptances, revisits and final choices, the Class of 2021 finalized their choices in April. Cardigan boys will attend 33 different secondary schools in eight different states, one excellent public school and one other country. Mr. Langetieg added that most of our boys will have a friend when they get to their school. Fifteen secondary schools will welcome more than one member of the Cardigan Class of 2021 to their campus this fall.
