Athletes of the Week for September 25, 2022

Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to Josh Kim ’23 and Elliot Watson ’25 for receiving Cardigan’s Student-Athlete of the Week Awards. Read what their coaches have to say about them below, and meet all the students who were nominated. Learn more about Athletics at Cardigan Mountain School.

Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Josh Kim ’23 - Varsity Football

Josh is a standout on the football team. He is prepared, engaged, and competitive. He does any job we ask of him and is always looking for ways to improve and help the team. He is an incredibly tough competitor who is a nightmare for the opposition. We are incredibly fortunate to have Josh on the Varsity Football Team and are looking forward to the rest of the season.

Sub-Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Elliot Watson ’25 - JV Football

Elliot had a great first game with a touchdown on both sides of the ball. Elliot scored his first touchdown on defense by intercepting a pass, resulting in roughly a 40-yard pick 6. His second touchdown came in the fourth quarter on offense. He ran off the left tackle for about 35-40 yards, scoring his second TD of the day.

Other Varsity Nominations

Asher Frankel ’23 - Varsity Mountain Biking

In the first NNEMTB race, held at Proctor, Asher won the B division race by nearly two minutes! In doing so, he has been upgraded to the A division in this mostly high school league. Even more notable was the number of riders Asher beat; he raced against 82 secondary school cyclists in grades 9-12! His teammates also elected him co-captain this week for his great leadership. Asher’s effort and determination during practices have inspired his teammates.

Maddox Linen ’23 - Varsity Cross Country

The Cardigan Cross Country Team scored this year when Maddox joined the ranks. He ran his first competitive 5K race on Wednesday like a pro. He was strategic, steady, and fast, placing in the the top 20 runners in the Lakes Region! Perhaps more importantly, he brings a participatory attitude to practice. He puts the “fun” in our Fun Friday, is kind to everyone, and even stays after practice to help pick up. Maddox’s running stride looks like it’s a mile long….about as long as his smile!

Tucker Harris ’23 - Varsity Soccer

The Varsity Soccer Team has named Tucker Harris as its Student-Athlete of the Week. He was elected co-captain this week due to his enthusiasm for the season, his considerable effort in practices and games, and his on-field commitment to winning and being the best during the first two games. He started the season as a center-back. His tenacity in defending, quickness, pace, and ability to keep the back line organized have served the team exceedingly well in wins against Fay School and Austin Prep School. He even used his predatory instincts to go forward from his deep position to catch Austin Prep unaware, creating a numbers-up situation and scoring a goal as a result. His team-first play and willingness to mark the opponent's top strikers have created a staunch defense in the early season for the Cougars.

Patrick Kim ’23 - Sailing

Sailing doesn’t always happen on sunny days with warm temperatures. There are times when it is cold, extra windy, and things just don't go right. Patrick proved he can handle the good times, by winning the race this weekend, and the hard times, by persevering when things were challenging. This past week he endured cold water and a boat that would not stay righted, falling over five times! Our boats are very heavy and even more so when there is water in the sails. Patrick kept his composure in the water and didn't get frustrated or mad when things didn't go as planned. And when he returned to shore, he made sure everything was taken care of. For these reasons he deserves to be considered for Athlete of the Week.

Other Sub-Varsity Nominations

Benjamin Ogarrio Enterria ’24 - Rock Climbing

Ben has had a very good week of rock climbing. He has learned efficient footwork when on the cliffs and how to safely belay a climber. He has been positive, supportive, and enthusiastic. Well done, Ben!

Kevin “Sefa” Petrini ’25 - Fourths Soccer

From the first day of tryouts, Sefa’s can-do attitude and positive work ethic stood out to the coaches. Pushing himself every single day at practice, he is hardly ever walking and is constantly trying to encourage his team as well. In the first game of the season, he was put in the defense despite describing himself as a midfielder. His countless clearances and stops on the defensive end helped secure the first win of the season for the Fourths Soccer Team.

Joonki “Michael” Yoon ’24 - Fourths Mountain Biking

Michael is brand new to the sport of mountain biking and has had a phenomenal start to the season, making incredible strides when it comes to his technical skills, fitness, and MTB IQ.  He gives 100% effort every practice, consistently riding in the front of the pack and stepping out of his comfort zone to attempt increasingly difficult trails and features. He has been a sterling model for his fellow riders, always leading by example and creating a fun and productive learning environment for all. We coaches consider ourselves incredibly fortunate to have Michael as a member of our team!

Yoonwoo “Dustin” Cho ’24 - JV Soccer

Dustin anchored the Cougar defense that gave up just two goals in four games since the start of the season. His booming goal kicks brought cheers from everyone, including Cardigan's opponents, and he nearly scored off a free kick from 30 yards as his shot skimmed just over the crossbar. In the first week of the season, Dustin has shown that he will be a force to be reckoned with all year.

Zhengyuan “Charlie” Liu ’24 - JV Cross Country

Charlie has been burning up the cross country trails this season. In his first race at Indian River he placed eighth overall and was Cardigan’s fastest JV runner at Holderness. He is always ready to run, play, stretch, or do core and more. He is a fantastic teammate and athlete. We are so happy to have him on our team. Go, Charlie!!

Emilio Gutierrez Coppel ’23 - Thirds Mountain Biking

Emilio has been enthusiastic and supportive of the Mountain Bike Team since day one. Each day he brings a positive attitude and a willingness to try new things. He has demonstrated the Cardigan Way by showing courage when trying new features, and had the courage to call out his peers when they were speaking Spanish too much. Lastly, he exemplified tenacity and determination in a recent time trial race, finishing with the fastest time on the team.

Jordan Pham ’23 - Thirds Soccer

Jordan has been the spark of the team in the opening week of play. In our opening jamboree, during which the team was the underdog against its high school opponents, he scored two beautiful goals and shot another off the post (which led directly to a rebound goal). His second goal against New Hampton was a beautiful strike. On a breakaway, he opened up to his right and tucked the ball into the top-right corner. Jordan celebrates each goal by bringing his team together, whether or not he is the scorer.

Archer Davenport ’23 - JV Mountain Biking

Archer has been an outstanding member of the team, leading by example and pushing the group to improve. He is consistently prepared and ready to ride. His energy and enthusiasm raises the entire group’s stoke level, making every practice more fun. And although he is working hard on his endurance, his most impressive biking skill is his ability to hit jumps and show us all how to whip better. Nice job, Archer!
