Athletes of the Week for October 9, 2020

Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to Josh Kim ’21 and YeChan “Leo” Kim ’24 for receiving Cardigan’s Athlete of the Week Award. Read what their coaches have to say about them below, and meet all the students who were nominated.

Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Josh Kim ’21 - Football

Josh is doing an excellent job on the offensive line. He is challenging himself to compete against stronger and faster opponents while listening well to coaches and teammates on how to improve. Josh is getting better every practice, and we are glad to have him on our team.

Sub-Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

YeChan “Leo” Kim ’24 - Developmental Soccer

Leo has an incredible attitude, sense of humor, and passion for soccer. Leo's background in futsal shines through as he threads through the defense, beautifully flicking a pass to a teammate, making the far post-run, or lasering a shot on net. He is continually working to improve his fitness and brings joy to every practice and game. This week, we have added longer runs to the warm-up, and he took on the challenge with great determination and dedication. Thank you, Leo, for being such an awesome teammate and student-athlete!

Other Varsity Nominations

Seongheon “Harold” Kim ’21 - Varsity Cross Country

Harold has engaged in varsity-level running in body, mind, and spirit. He works hard every day to develop his endurance and speed, and he blazed through the finish line at our first 5K race! More importantly, he stays positive and brings his wacky sense of humor to practice with him. Our younger athletes look up to him, his peers enjoy time with him, and we are so lucky to have him on the team.

Asher Frankel ’23 - Varsity Mountain Biking

Asher has impressed the coaches with his steady skill improvement and determination. He is the youngest member of this team, yet his results this week speak for themselves. In the first individual time trial on two laps of the old A racecourse, he finished 5th overall. More impressive was his climbing. Recently, on nearly a one-mile climb, featuring an average gradient of 8.5%, he finished third on the team. Finally, in Saturday's team enduro (four timed descents added together), Asher finished 6th. He is shaping up to be a wonderful all-around rider. In addition, the care he puts into maintaining his bike is a model for his teammates.

Amanuel “Mano” Levine ’23 - Advanced Soccer

Although he is one of the youngest members of the advanced soccer squad, Mano showed the poise and confidence of a polished player when he stepped up to the ball with all eyes on him at the end of practice last week. He promptly struck the crossbar for the third time in a row from the 18-yard line (something no other player had accomplished), winning a pizza party for his teammates. Mano is a highly skilled player who demonstrates courage each and every day as he takes on bigger and older players in order to improve his game.

Matthew Jung ’21 - Varsity Sailing

Matthew is a first-year sailor who has absorbed everything we have taught him in practices. He did very well in the Burritt Bonanza, placing 1st as a skipper in the first race and 3rd as a crew member in the second race. He is dependable, helpful, and an extremely hard worker. Keep up the great work, Matthew!

Other Sub-Varsity Nominations

Zimo “Madison” Tian ’22 - JV Cross Country

Madison had an amazing lake run yesterday. He pushed himself to his best, and it paid off. His quiet leadership style is earning him high praise from his coaches and respect from his teammates. He is an enthusiastic member of our team and supports his teammates in pursuing their goals by cheering them on and encouraging them to do their best. We are proud to select Madison as our student-athlete of the week.

Mitch Peurach ’22 - JV Mountain Biking

Mitch has brought energy and enthusiasm to the JV Mountain Bike Team this fall. He has a competitive mindset that motivates him to push himself outside of his comfort zone and go faster. His fearlessness on the most technical trails during our first Cardigan enduro race made him a strong contender for a spot on the podium. He placed first on the JV team and 6th overall in a competitive race. His excitement for biking resonates amongst his teammates and inspires others to keep the stoke alive. Great job, Mitch!

Holland Deane ’22 - Reserve Mountain Biking

Holland performed incredibly well in our skills competition on Saturday, placing 4th overall and beaten only by riders on the Thirds team.

Gustavo “Gus” Struck ’22  - Intermediate Soccer

Gus was elected co-captain by his teammates, and he consistently brings a positive attitude and his best effort to practice. Gus sets an example for the rest of the team. He displays a strong soccer IQ, moves the ball well on the pitch, and has a nose for the goal. The other players learn from Gus, but he puts the team before himself and is always humble.

Nicolas “Nico” Flores ’22 - Thirds Mountain Biking

Nico demonstrated exceptional technical skills in our most recent trials event last Saturday. He comes to practice every day with enthusiasm and positivity, which is contagious to those around him. Keep up the great energy, Nico!
