Cardigan Mountain School A boarding and day school for boys in grades 6 through 9

Athletes of the Week for October 31, 2020

Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to Jack Diemar ’21 and Joe Morse ’22 for receiving Cardigan’s Athlete of the Week Award. Read what their coaches have to say about them below, and meet all the students who were nominated.

Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Jack Diemar ’21 - Varsity Mountain Biking

Jack may be the most deserving young man for this award. He was robbed of a season that he was more prepared for than any athlete in the history of the biking program. As a co-captain of the team, he helped lead another very successful season. He is unquestionably the fastest mountain bike racer to ever grace the CMS bike program. He is a great teammate, a talented biker, and one of the hardest working young men at this School. This is not a week-long award for Jack. He worked as hard if not harder than every athlete, every single week. Great season, Jack, and best of luck in the future.

Sub-Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Joe Morse ’22 - Intermediate soccer

Joe moved up from the development program earlier in the season, and we were grateful to add him to our roster. He is an effort player, but he often deceives defenders with a quick touch and turn. Joe improved a great deal this season and plays the game with passion.

Other Varsity Nominations

Reaghan Moore ’22 - Varsity Cross Country

Reaghan is the ultimate participant. He takes on any and every challenge with fortitude and a smile. Ask him to run speed intervals, he's game. Ask him to run around the lake three times this season, and you'll hear no complaints. Ask him to don a minion onesie and run in the rain, and he'll be thrilled. Every team needs the positive and energetic presence of a member like Reaghan. He's a hard worker, devoted friend, and a talented runner. Thanks for the great season, Reaghan!

Reid Gueldenzoph ’22 - Advanced Soccer

Reid is an eighth grader who came back this year in excellent shape and with a wonderful growth mindset, determined to improve as a soccer player. Coming into tryouts, he stood out as one of the most improved players from last season, immediately impressing all with his composed and skillful play. He is a talented defender and understands the game, anticipating his opponents’ moves and passes so he is effectively able to step into the path of play and slow the attack down. He had a great fall season and will be a top player for the squad next season.

Keano Gianini ’24 - Sailing

Keano was new to the sailing team this year. He had no prior experience in sailing, but he ended the season competing in the A class races. To do well in sailing, one must listen, communicate effectively, and trust one’s partner when in the boat. Keano took direction well, moved with his partner in what can only be described as a well-choreographed dance, and did his absolute best every day. For his commitment to being his best, to leading with teamwork, and to maintaining an all-around positive nature, Keano has earned this week's nomination.

Other Sub-Varsity Nominations

Zeyu “Engel” Zhang ’22 - JV Cross Country

As our season comes to a close, we would like to recognize Engel Zhang for his enthusiastic support of his teammates, his positive attitude every day, and his blistering fast running accomplishments. Engel improved his Cougar Time Trial by over 2 minutes and his 5km time by 3 minutes! Engel is a super teammate and athlete.

Magnum Hudkins ’24 - Developmental Soccer

Magnum has become a true goal scorer. Although one of the youngest on the pitch, he shows great competitive spirit, never backs down from an opponent, and has developed a knack for putting the ball in the back of the net. Any team he is on has a fighting chance of victory because he never gives up. He has been a great teammate and leader this week and throughout the season.

Zeze Probstein ’22 - Reserve Mountain Biking

Zeze has been a solid presence on our team all season and has been a pillar of positivity for the boys. He leads by example and puts 100% into every practice without a single complaint. He culminated the season with his first overall win in the C-class race, which is a testament to all the effort he has put in this fall.

Churchill Salathe ’22 - JV Mountain Biking

Church has been selected as the student-athlete of the week for JV mountain biking. He has worked hard to be on multiple podiums throughout the season. In fact, he took a digger in the last race of the season but was still able to complete another lap.

Grayson Jones ’23 - Thirds Mountain Biking

Grayson has shown enthusiasm and dedication throughout this entire season. He has grown significantly as a mountain biker in technical riding as well as in his fitness. He has also shown significant growth in his relations with his teammates. Great season!
