Athletes of the Week for October 2, 2020

Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to Junkai “Tiger” Yang ’22 and Liam Murphy ’22 for receiving Cardigan’s Athlete of the Week Award. Read what their coaches have to say about them below, and meet all the students who were nominated.

Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Junkai “Tiger” Yang ’22 - Varsity Cross Country

Last year as a seventh grader, Tiger showed incredible talent as a runner and ran with some of the Lakes Region’s top runners. This year, he hasn’t missed a beat! His first 5K race of the season rivaled his personal records at the end of last season. His willingness to enter the “pain cave” and work through obstacles is unparalleled. Most importantly, his kind and humble demeanor makes him a beloved member of our team. His desire for personal excellence and commitment to his teammates has not gone unnoticed. Thank you, Tiger, for your perseverance and dedication!

Sub-Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Liam Murphy ’22 - JV Mountain Biking

Liam’s effort during the first few weeks led to a jump from the thirds program to racing on the varsity team last Saturday. His stoke is also high at all times. Great work, Liam; keep it up!

Other Varsity Nominations

Sebastien Madan ’21 - Varsity Mountain Biking

Sebastien has had a stellar start to the season. Although he was not named a captain, he often leads by example and continues the traditions of the team that he has been on for three years. He has been pushing his cardiovascular fitness to new heights, striving to lead the team in effort. He scored a third place podium finish at our first in-house race this past weekend.

Archer Davenport ’23 - Varsity Sailing

Archer is a newcomer to the team but has been eager to learn as much as he can. He won two races recently as a crew member with Charlie Wilson ’21 as his skipper. He has been positive and helpful, and an excellent teammate. He has made significant progress as a new sailor, and we can't wait to see what he does the rest of the season!

Owen Tatro ’21 - Advanced Soccer

Owen played for the JV team last year and has definitely improved his play and skill set since then. In training sessions this fall, he has stood out for his athletic fitness, awareness, and willingness to improve and understand the game. His positive attitude, work ethic, enthusiasm, and seriousness of purpose are plain to observe each day. As a result, Owen was selected by his 30 teammates as one of the soccer captains for this fall season.

John “Connor” Hennessey ’21 - Football

Connor is continually pushing himself to give 100% effort and expects his teammates to do the same. He quietly leads his team to improve their abilities and sportsmanship. Connor is an excellent example of a Cardigan student-athlete.

Other Sub-Varsity Nominations

James Willett ’21 - Thirds Mountain Biking

James is new to biking and has been determined to improve as a mountain biker from the get-go. He does not hesitate to offer an encouraging word to his teammates or go the extra mile in practice and push himself a bit more to get stronger. It was no surprise when he was elected team captain based on his leadership style. In our most recent race, James placed third, beating all but two JV riders in three full laps of the C course. Keep up the awesome work, James!

Liam Burke ’23 - JV Cross Country

Liam has had a great start to the cross country season. He has been a positive, enthusiastic member of the team and participates fully. Liam came in fourth place overall in the combined Varsity/JV "Get Your Vote On" 5K race. He also did a terrific job cheering for all of his teammates after his run was completed, showing terrific sportsmanship. Keep running fast, Liam!

Indiana “Indy” Grossbard ’23 - Intermediate Soccer

Though soccer is not his first sport, Indy has impressed his teammates and coaches with his effort and determination to do his best. He is learning the game quickly, and he has already become an offensive threat in scrimmages each day. He has most notably led the team in all fitness tests, including sprints and a 5K trail run. Indy works hard every day and is always seeking to improve, making him a model student-athlete.

Evan Mann ’21 - Reserve Mountain Biking

Evan has been working incredibly hard and took first place in our developmental race on Saturday. Keep up the great work, Evan.

Sunghoon “Willy” Park ’23 - Developmental Soccer

Willy has shown incredible improvement from the beginning of the season. Starting with a limited skill level and tentative play, Willy has grown into a confident player and a threat on the pitch. This was shown in last Saturday's Cardigan Cup, during which he helped his team of more experienced and advanced players take home the W. In addition to improved his athletic performance, Willy is hard-working and always does the right thing. He is a positive role model for his teammates and peers. He can be counted on and leads with quiet determination. We are thrilled to have Willy on the squad!
