Athletes of the Week for May 10, 2026

Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to Reed Oberting ’26 and Alex Elkus ’26 for earning Cardigan’s Student-Athlete of the Week Awards. Read what their coaches have to say about them below, and meet all the students who were nominated.

Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Reed Oberting ’26 - Varsity Lacrosse

Reed has had an outstanding season at short-stick defensive midfield. He can be counted on to make great plays on the defensive end of the field and then turn around and make the needed clearing play to transition us to offense. His teammates noted his gritty big-boy plays in the Eaglebrook game. He plays like a dog––all over the field every day, never giving up, and always smiling. Keep up the great work on and off the field!

Sub-Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Alex Elkus ’26 - JV Baseball

Alex has had an outstanding season. As one of our elected captains, he has led by example in both his actions and his performance on the field. He has been our most consistent hitter and reliable presence on the mound, giving us quality innings whenever called upon. Most recently, he turned in an impressive performance against a strong Proctor squad.

Other Varsity Nominations

Cayden LeRoy ’27 - Varsity Baseball

Cayden had a great week, with two hits and a runner caught stealing in our win against Groton. Against Plymouth, he got on base every at-bat and once again did a great job behind the plate.

Lorenzo Torres ’26 - Varsity Tennis

Lorenzo decided to try tennis for the first time this year, and he has done an outstanding job both on the court and off. It is clear that his experience competing in other sports has helped shape his strong work ethic, tenacity, and grit. He earned a spot in the singles lineup through his determination and competitive play. The coaches have also relied on him in crucial doubles matches when outcomes were down to the wire; his composure and ability to compete under pressure make him a valuable member of the team. Beyond his athletic ability, Lorenzo is an excellent leader and role model for his younger teammates. He consistently demonstrates sportsmanship, dedication, and a team-first attitude, making a positive impact on the entire program.

Other Sub-Varsity Nominations

Tom Andrews ’29 - Reserve Tennis

We nominate Tom because of his outstanding commitment to both practice and the sport itself. He is consistently on time, treats his peers with respect, and demonstrates excellent sportsmanship during team activities and matches. He is always kind, supportive, and encouraging toward others, and he accepts feedback positively in order to improve his tennis skills. Despite being one of the younger players and a sixth grader, he follows the instructions of his captains immediately and sets an excellent example for his teammates.

Daniel Gonzalez Kauffman ’27 - Fourths Tennis

Daniel’s tenacity and positivity have made him a beloved teammate and formidable opponent in our practices. He has improved tremendously this season, and it’s come from hard work and focus.

Bob Zou ’27 - JV Tennis

We nominate Bob because of his phenomenal run to the finals in yesterday’s Lakes Region tournament. It was especially impressive because he played doubles in the tournament but usually plays singles.

Topher Bunnell ’28 - Thirds Tennis

Topher has been an incredible doubles partner this year; he brought great positivity to the team and great skill. He worked hard throughout the season and lifted his teammates when they needed support. Keep doing a good job, Topher!

Yusei Taketomi ’29 - Thirds Baseball

Yusei earns this week’s Student-Athlete of the Week recognition for his outstanding performance on the mound, leading the team to its first win in two years. In a composed and determined outing against Lebanon, he pitched five complete innings and delivered exactly the kind of leadership and confidence the team needed. Over the course of 81 pitches, he showed excellent control and poise, allowing just one walk while striking out three batters. He consistently attacked the strike zone and kept Lebanon’s offense in check, limiting them to only five earned hits throughout the game. More importantly, his effort set the tone for the entire team and marked a major milestone. His toughness, focus, and ability to rise to the moment make him a deserving recipient of this recognition.

Ryan Pfeiffer ’28 - Reserve Lacrosse

Ryan’s continued effort and improvement in all aspects of lacrosse keep our defense running smoothly and ultimately betters every other member of the team. Fearlessness and determination are the two words that come to mind when observing his game. His ability to communicate as a defenseman, cause turnovers, and vacuum up ground balls all create great opportunities for us as a team.
