Athletes of the Week for January 15, 2023

Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to Sifei “Joe” Jia ’23 and Junyan “Joey” Huang ’24 for receiving Cardigan’s Student-Athlete of the Week Awards. Read what their coaches have to say about them below, and meet all the students who were nominated. Learn more about Athletics at Cardigan Mountain School.

Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Sifei “Joe” Jia ’23 - Varsity Nordic Skiing

Joe has had a great week of skiing. He has been a positive leader on the team and has done a terrific job in his role as captain. He had a fast ski at Dublin on Wednesday with a time of 17:28.1 for the 4km freestyle course. This was the first race of the season. Well done, Joe!

Sub-Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Junyan “Joey” Huang ’24 - JV Basketball

Joey has worked hard all season and continues to get better. He made some big plays in our game against Eaglebrook, and he can always be counted on to be in the right place. He is coachable and tries to execute whatever is asked of him, regardless of the difficulty or obstacles involved.

Other Varsity Nominations

Terry Langetieg ’24 - Varsity Wrestling

Terry is a three-year Cardigan wrestler and is our team captain. He routinely puts forth his best effort and was able to see the fruits of his labor when he won the Cardigan wrestling tournament for his weight class. Terry is a leader on and off the mat, and we are excited to see what the rest of the season brings.

Tucker Harris ’23 - Varsity Hockey

Tucker had a massive week for Cardigan’s Varsity Hockey Team. Across two games against Hillside and Eaglebrook, he led the team to two convincing victories. He notched two goals and an assist on Saturday against Eaglebrook and controlled the ice with his effort, energy, and discipline. Tucker has continued to show up in big ways as a leader and as a contributor and has been an exemplary teammate throughout the season. He is getting better each day.

Carlos Mayer Alverde ’24 - Varsity Snowboarding

We’d like to recognize Carlos Mayer Alverde for his “go for broke” attitude on the slopes. As a first year competitor he placed 22 out of a field of 48 high school boys at our first competition (GS) this season. He loves to rip it up on the slopes!

Mikey Mitchell ’24 - Varsity Basketball

Mikey played hard in the Eaglebrook game and was one of our leading scorers. He had several steals in our press and had double figure rebounds as well.

Brandon Hennessey ’23 - Varsity Alpine Skiing

Brandon had an outstanding first race of the season. After missing last season with a broken leg, he came back firing, placing fourth in the first school team race of the season and beating many USSA athletes. He has been focused and hard-working throughout the season, and this showed in his confident skiing last Wednesday.

Other Sub-Varsity Nominations

Ryan Sands ’25 - Thirds Hockey

Thirds Hockey nominates Ryan Sands for Student-Athlete of the Week. He consistently puts his best effort into practices and games, becoming a better player each week. With his hard work, he has become a key figure on the team’s defense. His dedication to the sport and his team makes him deserving of our Student-Athlete of the Week award.

Sungyun Kim ’23 - Thirds Basketball

Sungyun is a pivotal member of the Thirds Basketball Team as one of its primary ball handlers. Over the past week, our team has worked on making smarter decisions with the ball while trying to play at a quicker pace. In our game against Eaglebrook, he played hard, pushed the ball up the court, and was a contributing factor in many of our points. He demonstrated his understanding of the tactics that were worked on in practice and did well implementing them and boosting his and his teammates’ play.

Aidan Milone ’23 - JV Hockey

Aidan has had an outstanding week of play on the JV Hockey Team. He has worked really hard all year and it is paying off. His offensive play has helped his team find success in recent games, but his play away from the puck––his effort, his willingness to stick to his team’s systems, and his overall coachability––has made him a very valuable player for his team.

Brady Drury ’25 - Reserve Basketball

Reserve Basketball would like to nominate Brady Drury for Student-Athlete of the Week. He has been a consistently strong player for the reserve team on both sides of the court and has contributed multiple points in each game this week.

Annabi Diallo ’24 - Reserve Hockey

This week our Student-Athlete of the Week nomination goes to Annabi Diallo. He has been an outstanding captain and teammate for us all season; he consistently puts in the work outside of practice to lead our team off the ice, setting an example of how to be a supportive teammate. During our game this week, and in our scrimmages, his positional play has been excellent, particularly on the breakout when Annabi is always in the correct position to help the team advance the puck.

Griffin Jones ’25 - JV Alpine Skiing

Griffin has been a dedicated member of our team and has been hard at work improving his skiing. He devotes himself to each drill and tries his hardest at every practice. At the first race of the season, he was the top finisher for the JV Alpine Team. He is also patient and kind to his teammates. Way to go, Griffin!
