Athletes of the Week for February 17, 2020

Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to Nick George ’21 and Xuanyu “Tommy” Li ’20 for receiving Cardigan’s Athlete of the Week Award. Read what their coaches have to say about them below, and meet all the students who were nominated.

Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Nick George ’21 - Varsity Basketball

Nick has been getting better with every game this season. With his improvement, he has become a more significant contributor to the team. He is a strong competitor who works hard in practices and games.

Sub-Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Xuanyu “Tommy” Li ’20 – JV Basketball

Tommy has worked incredibly hard all year and continues to exhibit strong leadership on and off the court. His efforts also extend to both ends of the court. Defensively, he communicates well with his teammates, helps limit opportunities for the opponent, and fights for every rebound. On the offensive side, he is a calming presence, and his ability to score and distribute the ball to his teammates is unmatched. We hope he will continue providing the same level of effort and intensity in the final two weeks.

Other Varsity Nominations

Jaeseong “Nathan” Kim ’23 - Nordic Skiing

Nathan has been a positive, enthusiastic member of the team and is always ready to ski. This week he completed the 5km classic race at Dublin with a smile on his face, in spite of the difficult, icy conditions. He has also shown remarkable skill development in both classic and skate techniques this season. Well done, Nathan!

Anders Silitch ’21 – Alpine Skiing

Anders had a focused block of Super G training and then represented Cardigan in a strong Super G race at the Dartmouth Skiway on Friday. Handling a major event shift, he trained slalom on Saturday and then threw down two great runs at Sunapee on Sunday in the U14 Western Division Qualifier, earning a 6th place finish against 50 boys his age. With this result, Anders punched his ticket to the NHARA U14 Championships in March.

Ben McCormick ’21 – Varsity Hockey

Ben has been an absolute gamer all season for the Varsity Hockey Team. Despite being one of the team’s younger members, he routinely exemplifies the leadership, work ethic, and maturity of a player/teammate many years his senior. He has repeatedly been called upon to guard the Cardigan net in big games, and he brought his intensity and competitiveness to our recent game against KUA. He turned aside 30 shots in a 2-0 shutout win against a team that was skilled, big, and fast. His success can be attributed to his talent and work ethic, but his strengths as a teammate come from being selfless and a total team player. He deserves every bit of success that he has experienced and then some, as he has been nothing short of hard-working and coachable all season long.

Josh Kim ’21 – Wrestling

Josh has gotten stronger and more athletic as the wrestling season has progressed. At the beginning of the program, he needed daily encouragement and reminders regarding the specific moves and drills. Once he began to have success as a wrestler in competitions, he started to believe in himself and realize that wrestling might be a sport he could actually be good at. His work ethic at practice improved, and he trained harder with his partner. Conditioning that used to require an extreme effort was no longer a weakness. He has improved steadily throughout the season and is now winning matches on the mat. His teammates are excited for his success and have been cheering him on and encouraging him to work hard.

Kewei “Kevin” Wang ’20 - Snowboarding

Kevin has been an integral part of the Snowboarding Team this year due to his leadership, his willingness to step outside of his comfort zone, and his positive attitude. He has also progressed this year into a versatile snowboarder with the ability to ride in any terrain. During the first slopestyle competition at Cannon Mountain, he took risks by hitting the more technical features in the terrain park and did not get defeated by his overall results. His willingness to learn new tricks and motivate his teammates makes him a great role model for younger riders on the team. Great work, Kevin!

Other Sub-Varsity Nominations

Cristobal Lopez Domenech ’20 – Reserve Hockey

Chris is a wonderful member of this team. He always has a positive attitude and is eager to learn and improve with each chance he has to skate. He has grown a great deal as a skater and has learned many of the basic expectations and rules of the game of hockey. He has come a long way this season and is eager for our next game to test all the skills and strategies he has been learning over the last few weeks.

Beau Brissette ’21 – JV Hockey

Beau took his game to the next level for the JV Hockey Team this past week. With hard work in practice and a willingness to compete at all times in games, he has really improved his skills on the ice and has helped his team find success.

Billy Lyons ’20 - Thirds Hockey

Billy has been working hard on and off the ice to improve and help his team. He has been a rock star for the squad all season long.

George Wilkins ’20 – Thirds Basketball

George has played a pivotal role in our offense, driving the ball into the paint when necessary and making his teammates look good with quick, frequent assists.

Carter Davis ’22 – Reserve Basketball

Carter brings an energy that is infectious. He is always putting forth his maximum effort and is willing to play any position he is asked.
