Athletes of the Week for February 11, 2024

Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to Thomas Birks ’24 and Princeton Jackson ’26 for receiving Cardigan’s Student-Athlete of the Week Awards. Read what their coaches have to say about them below, and meet all the students who were nominated.

Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Thomas Birks ’24 - Varsity Hockey

Thomas played two very solid games last week against KUA and Eaglebrook, collecting points in each. Despite dealing with an injury throughout the season, he has persevered to carve out a solid role on the team’s powerplay unit and has contributed offensively when healthy. Thomas has grown as a hockey player despite the choppy rhythm of his season and continues to get closer to his potential on the ice.

Sub-Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Princeton Jackson ’26 - Thirds Basketball

This week Princeton has played the most aggressive and intelligent defense we’ve seen out of him this season. He has gotten a hand on the ball countless times in the past two games and interrupted the opponent’s offensive rhythm.

Other Varsity Nominations

Jayden Wang ’26 - Varsity Nordic Skiing

Jayden has had a great week of skiing. He is positive, enthusiastic, and always gives his best effort. He has been improving in both skate and classic technique and had a great race on Saturday at the NH Coaches Series Race in Plymouth, skiing fast on the challenging five-kilometer loop in slow conditions on a very warm day. Well done, Jayden!

London Raysor ’25 - Varsity Basketball

London had an outstanding week, sharing the leading scorer role in the Vermont Academy game. Against our rivals from Eaglebrook, he exploded for 44 points, leading us to a great victory. In addition, he was a key to our press, creating many turnovers that led to himself and his teammates scoring many easy baskets.

Alex Kernisant ’24 - Varsity Wrestling

Alex has been an outstanding leader throughout the season as one of the team captains. He works hard, motivates his peers with a positive attitude, and leads by example. Keep up the good work, Alex!

Simon Manners ’25 - Varsity Alpine Skiing

This past week, Simon won two US Ski and Snowboard U14 races in a row and has trained like a pro. At the Lakes Region GS at Sunapee, he also earned points for the team that helped propel Cardigan to a victory.

Other Sub-Varsity Nominations

Dustin Cho ’24 - Thirds Hockey

Dustin came to hockey not long ago, but through hard work, perseverance, and coachability, he has cracked our lineup and become an effective team member. His speed makes up for his inexperience, and his strength makes him difficult to move around. All these efforts were rewarded this weekend when he scored his first organized hockey goal. Congrats, Dustin, and keep up the good work!

Paco Souther ’25 - JV Hockey

Paco has worked really hard this entire year to improve his goaltending skills, and this has paid off in recent weeks. He played his best game in a 1-1 tie versus Proctor, making save after save to keep his team in the game. Keep up the wonderful work, Paco!

Gil Villarrea Garcial ’25 - Reserve Hockey

Gil has shown tremendous growth as a hockey player this season. He was brand new to the game in November and has grown into quite an impressive wing. A natural-born athlete, he has learned a lot about the pace and puck movement in the game of hockey. He had an impressive game against Eaglebrook last Saturday and was able to put together many plays, moving the puck down the ice and creating some impressive shooting opportunities. We look forward to seeing Gil finish out the hockey season strong!

Griffin McClure ’24 - JV Basketball

Griffin has really stepped up for the JV Basketball Team over the last few weeks. His effort and hustle are unmatched, which has helped keep us in a few tough games recently. His relentless pursuit of rebounds and his dedication to improving daily have earned him a spot in the starting lineup.

Felix Hoover ’25 - Reserve Basketball

In recent weeks, Felix has demonstrated great leadership and hustle. He is a smart decision-maker and a strong contributor on both sides of the court.
