Athletes of the Week for December 9, 2019

Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to Heewoo Jung ’20 and Xuanyu “Tommy” Li ’20 for receiving Cardigan’s Athlete of the Week Award. Read what their coaches have to say about them below and meet all the students who were nominated.

Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Heewoo Jung ’20—Varsity Basketball

Heewoo showed poise during the Cardigan Jamboree. He led the team in points in the consolation game and kept our offense organized from the point guard position throughout the day, which is no easy task. He also led by example on the defensive end of the floor where hustled and never backed down from the opponent. We were very proud of his play on both ends of the floor this weekend. He is very coachable and did exactly what a captain is supposed to do.

Sub-Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Xuanyu “Tommy” Li ’20—JV Basketball

Tommy has been stellar since our return from Thanksgiving break. First, he worked diligently to get caught up with learning the offensive sets. He was then voted a captain because of his consistent energy and positive attitude. He has been a force on both the offensive and defensive ends in practice, and his efforts have served as a great example for his teammates. He performed well in the first game, blocking a number of shots and stopping countless drives by the other team. He also found a way to score inside, despite the size and strength of the opponent—a testament to his effort and attention to detail. We hope he continues to lead our team in a positive way.

Other Varsity Nominations

Reaghan Moore ’22—Nordic Skiing

Reaghan has had a great start to the Nordic ski season. He is positive and enthusiastic and helps others when they have questions. Reaghan challenges himself on the ski trails and has made noticeable improvements in his downhill technique at the Greens and Clancy Hill.

Willem Naughton ’20—Alpine Skiing

Willem has absolutely crushed alpine skiing this week as a positive teammate and as an individual performer. He is consistently one of the first ones on the hill, is excited to ski, and is always looking to improve. He has also become a leader, helping the new athletes learn the ropes. The alpine coaches are thrilled with how he has started the season.

Jihyeok “Eric” Hong ’20—Wrestling

Eric is one of fourteen seniors on the Cardigan Wrestling Team. His previous experience with the team has provided him with a fertile training ground to develop his skills on the mat. He is a strong competitor and sets a workman-like style and pace for every practice, demonstrating a positive, enthusiastic attitude. He is patient, firm, and thorough with the younger wrestlers, and draws on his wrestling knowledge to teach the boys moves he has learned. He has gained a great deal of confidence this year, and his coaches are looking forward to this season. Keep up the good work, Eric!

Ki “Jerry” Zhang ’20—Snowboarding

Although this is his first year snowboarding, Jerry is already committed to daily improvement and brings a willingness to step outside his comfort zone on the mountain. He brings positive energy to the team and does not allow the variable mountain conditions to affect his level of stoke. He pushes himself every day and encourages his teammates to do the same. He is a great addition to the team and has set the bar high for achieving goals. Well done, Jerry!

Bryce Terry ’20—Varsity Hockey

Bryce had a phenomenal weekend during the Varsity Hockey Team's first three-game road trip of the season. Across the team's three contests against Westminster, Salisbury, and Berkshire, he notched four points (2G, 2A), and was instrumental in both of the team's wins in its first two games. In addition to his point production, he has been a consistent source of energy and leadership for his teammates. This leadership was on full display this weekend when he took control of games throughout the duration of the road trip, showcasing exactly why he is looked up to by teammates on and off the ice.

Other Sub-Varsity Nominations

Danny Commerford ’22—Thirds Hockey

Danny is a hard worker in practices and in games. He is quiet, consistent, and an impact player for our team. He has tallied six goals in our last two games.  He works hard to get to the right place on the ice and is always looking to make the pass...unless he has the shot!

Junkai “Tiger” Yang ’22—Reserve Hockey

Tiger is a strong skater and works hard in practice to improve his skills. He is motivated and enthusiastic for each practice and is always willing to try a new drill. He is a positive influence on other players and has been helpful in supporting some of his teammates who are new to hockey and skating.

Oskar Hakkarainen ’20—JV Hockey

Oskar has had a great week on the JV Hockey Team. He scored twice and had two assists in a 6-4 win and followed up with another great game the next day. He is working hard in practice and improving his skills daily.

Junhyeong An ’23—Thirds Basketball

Jun has been nominated for his effort and hustle, both of which have been exemplary. He is also already proving himself to be a leader on the court.

Junhyeong “Jake” Lee ’22 – Reserve Basketball

Jake has been a role model on the team with his behavior on and off the court. On the court he gives 100%, and off the court he is always doing the right thing in the locker room.
