Athletes of the Week for December 15, 2024

Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to Landon Nickulas ’25 and Andy Do ’25 for earning Cardigan’s Student-Athlete of the Week Awards. Read what their coaches have to say about them below, and meet all the students who were nominated.

Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Landon Nickulas ’25 - Varsity Hockey

Landon tallied his first goal for Cardigan’s Varsity Hockey Team on Wednesday against Hillside. The goal was nice, and his effort and attitude all season long have been outstanding. He’s been a quiet leader on the team and his humility and ability have both been noticeable. Great job, Landon!

Sub-Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Andy Do ’25 - JV Basketball

Andy has started every game for us this season, and his consistency has helped us achieve an early lead in every game. He may not be the highest scorer on the stats sheet, but he does the little things right, such as boxing out and executing the pick-n-roll to perfection. His patience on the offensive and defensive ends is a huge boost for us whenever he is in the game.

Other Varsity Nominations

Markus Jones ’25 - Varsity Basketball

Markus has played hard and been one of the leading scorers in every one of our games so far. In addition, he has been one of our best defensive players as well as one of our top rebounders.

Owen Xu ’25 - Varsity Nordic

Owen has had a great week of skiing. He has been prepared for practice and has put forth his best effort. The consistent work he has put into improving his technique and fitness is showing up in his performance in both classic and skate skiing. He is supportive of his teammates and listens carefully to feedback. Well done, Owen!

Alex Elkus ’26 - Varsity Alpine Skiing

Alex has been crushing it this winter, especially during the first two weeks when his improvement was drastic. He works hard, listens, and is incredibly coachable. The coaches are excited for his growth throughout the winter!

Other Sub-Varsity Nominations

Eli Heffer ’25 - JV Hockey

Eli has made tremendous strides since last year. He is a hard worker, solid skater, and has emerged as one of our best penalty killers. As a ninth grader on the team, others look up to him and he leads by example.

Mike Liu ’27 - Thirds Hockey

Mike is our Student Athlete of the Week! He had an outstanding weekend, scoring multiple goals and showcasing his skills as a strong left winger. Always ready to lend a hand, his positive attitude and teamwork make him a valuable addition to our team. His dedication and performance continue to inspire those around him, and we are lucky to have him on board!

Eric Wang ’27 - Reserve Basketball

Eric has demonstrated a determination to get better every day. He impresses us with his will to improve and impact the team in a positive way.

Angel Genaro ’27 - Recreational Skiing and Snowboarding

Angel has truly earned the nomination for Athlete of the Week through his extraordinary courage and perseverance. During a recent visit to Ragged Mountain, he faced a challenging moment at the summit, when he felt nervous despite days of lessons leading up to the climb. Instead of giving in to fear, he demonstrated incredible determination, working hard and staying focused as he navigated his way down the mountain. Angel’s resilience and refusal to give up, even in the face of adversity, serve as an inspiration to his peers and embody the spirit of dedication and grit that define an athlete.

Hugo Li ’27 - Reserve Hockey

Over the past two years, Hugo has grown tremendously as a hockey player. He arrives at each practice ready to work hard and continues to develop his skills, both in skating and passing the puck. His effort paid off during our first game this year when he scored his first career hockey goal as a Cardigan Cougar.
