Congratulations to Liam Burke ’23 and Jordan Pham ’23 for receiving Cardigan’s Student-Athlete of the Week Awards. Read what their coaches have to say about them below, and meet all the students who were nominated. Learn more about Athletics at Cardigan Mountain School.
Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week
Liam Burke ’23 - Varsity Hockey
Liam has been lights out to begin the season for the Varsity Hockey Team. In five games played, he has surrendered just four goals and earned two shutouts. In our most recent game on Wednesday against Atlantic Coast Academy, he turned aside some difficult shots on his way to earning a shutout and a Cougar victory. Liam is a steady presence in the Cougar net and is getting better each day.
Sub-Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week
Jordan Pham ’23 - Thirds Hockey
Jordan has earned Student-Athlete of the Week for his leadership on offense. He led the Cougar’s offense with a hat trick against the Upper Valley Storm, following up the next day with another goal against the Adirondack Thunder. His success on offense can be attributed to his hard work and determination in practice and games.
Other Varsity Nominations
Yichen “Tony” Li ’24 - Nordic Skiing
Tony has had a great week of practice. He has been prepared every day and has worked hard to improve his fitness, strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination. He has been a leader by example on the team and always has a big, bright smile on his face. Well done, Tony!
Cameron Blatz ’25 - Varsity Alpine
Cameron has earned skiing’s Student-Athlete of the Week. He absolutely shreds on the snow and in the gates and will be a force to be reckoned with on the race hill this winter. He is also a hard worker on the hill, never complains no matter the conditions, and brings a really fun energy to practice. Cameron is helpful and does the right thing to make himself and the team better.
Junhyeong “Jun” An ’23 - Varsity Basketball
Jun played a great defensive game all week. In our game against Proctor, he not only played great defense, but he was also one of the leading scorers.
Carlos Mayer Alverde ’24 - Varsity Snowboarding
We want to recognize Carlos for the fun spirit he brings to each practice. He tries his hardest, has fun, and encourages his teammates.
Other Sub-Varsity Nominations
Cam Collicott ’24 - JV Hockey
Cam has had an outstanding week on the JV Hockey Team. His hard work in practice and consistent effort in games has really paid off. In our two games this week, he scored five goals in the first game (a 6-4 win) and four goals in the second game. An amazing nine goals in two games rarely happens. And Cam could have scored more, but instead, he passed to his teammates, so they could have the chance to score.
Mana Petrini ’25 - Reserve Hockey
Mana has been a wonderful member of our team this season with both his effort and ability. He takes each and every practice, drill, and learning moment seriously, and he exemplifies how hard work and dedication can lead to improvement on the ice. As his skating skills continue to develop, Mana has consistently been one of the most improved players on our team.
Griffin McClure ’24 - Reserve Basketball
Griffin has been a leader in practice, full of good advice and encouragement for his teammates. He also put up a great defense during the game yesterday, making both offensive and defensive rebounds several times. All in all, he has proven himself to be a good team captain.
Gyeongmin “Andy” Han ’23 - JV Basketball
Andy showed great leadership leading up to the holiday break. Despite practicing with both JV and varsity, he maintained a great work ethic and good energy in our game against Brewster Academy. He led the effort for the team defensively, forcing turnovers in a full court press, and he also contributed to the offensive effort, scoring in the paint and converting from the free throw line. Andy led by example and showed his team how to compete.
Juhwan “Ryan” Sung '23 - Thirds Basketball
Ryan has been a great team member for the Thirds Basketball Team for the entire season. On both the offensive and defensive end, he has played with intensity and heart. In each of our games, he has featured and been a spark off of the bench. In our most recent game against Plainfield, Ryan was an important member of our second-half comeback, forcing turnovers and hitting crucial jump shots.
