Athletes of the Week for December 17, 2018

Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to Adam Becht '19 and Alex Kozin '20 for receiving Cardigan’s Athlete of the Week Award. Read what their coaches have to say about them below, and meet all the students who were nominated.

Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Adam Becht '19 – Varsity Hockey

Typical of a hockey goalie, Adam has his own personality that suits his position quite well. Adam is quiet and focused, but his main goal is to see Cardigan on top night after night. Adam was instrumental in Cardigan's making it to the final last weekend. Early in the game Adam stood tall against a flurry of shots. Although he gave up a goal early, Adam learned from the past and competed even harder giving his team a chance to win the game, which they did. This is the mark of a true competitor! Bravo!

Sub-Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Alex Kozin '20 – JV Hockey

Alex’s hard work in practice combined with his positive attitude has allowed him to emerge as a leader on the JV Hockey Team. His speed and physical play create a lot of offense for our team, and as a result, he has scored some key goals in the last few games.

Other Varsity Nominations

Gianluca Audia '19 – Varsity Alpine Skiing

Gianluca has had a tremendous start to the season. Aside from making huge strides in his own skiing, he has been one of the returning veterans setting the tone for the team. We rarely make note of the people doing everything right. Gianluca has been helping the coaches, his teammates, and carrying on the traditions of the Cardigan ski program. Well done Gianluca.

Diego Escalante '20 – Varsity Wrestling

Diego is an inspirational leader and is held in the highest esteem by all of his coaches and teammates. Diego is one of the team’s hardest workers. He arrives at practices early to begin conditioning and sets a great example for his teammates. His enthusiasm and encouragement are constantly pushing the entire team to greater heights. Diego also plays an essential role at meets, sometimes acting as an additional coach, particularly when Cardigan wrestlers are competing on multiple mats. His familiarity with wrestling moves and counter moves provides vital guidance to his teammates, especially the younger wrestlers. At a recent competition at Keene Middle School, he dominated his opponents with skill and precision winning both of his matches. There’s no question that the wrestling team and the entire school benefits from Diego’s example and leadership role. He is the best of the best!

Jeffrey Song '20 – Varsity Nordic Skiing

Jeffrey has had a great week of skiing. He gives full effort during practice. Jeffrey has learned to classic ski and skate ski. He is positive, enthusiastic and a great teammate. Nice skiing, Jeffrey!

Kevin  Wang '20 – Varsity Snowboarding

Kevin has shown huge improvement and commitment over the past few weeks. He has gone from a never ever snowboarder to a rider who has perfected turns, is riding blue and black terrain comfortably, and has even hit a box at Clancy. Kevin will be ready to compete in our first GS event after the break. Remarkable!

Dalton Donovan '19 – Varsity Basketball

Dalton came off the bench Saturday and produced on both the offensive and defensive end of the floor. Not only did Dalton provide a spark in light of adversity, with a strong dribble drive and score, he maintained a positive attitude on the bench cheering on his teammates. The highlight of the game was when Dalton came off a double screen and knocked down a pivotal three ball. Dalton always has a positive attitude and always puts the team first; he is an admirable team player.

Other Sub-Varsity Nominations

Tom Woo Choi Li '20 – Reserve Basketball

Tom consistently tries his best during practice and games. Tom shows up each day with a positive attitude. When things get tough, he can be counted on to help bring everyone up.

Jenson Smock '21 –  JV Basketball

Jenson has done an outstanding job so far this year. He is playing more consistent each week and has worked to become one of the most reliable shooters on our team. His basketball knowledge far exceeds his years. Jenson is a great teammate and a positive presence on the court. He has great defensive effort, and he is honing in his shot from the three-point arc. Jenson helped the Cougars mount a comeback at Tilton with several big shots. He also put together a strong second half in a loss to White Mountain with three 3-pointers.

Ale Ramirez Garcia ’22 – Reserve Hockey

Ale has been a pleasure to coach! He has grown to love the game of hockey and brings a great attitude to the rink each day. Ale has shown tremendous improvement since the start of the season. His work ethic and positive attitude have made a direct impact on the entire Reserve Hockey Team.

Cayden Van Dolah ’21 –  Thirds Hockey

Cayden played one of his best games of the year on Saturday against the Vermont Dynamos. He did well to gap up, separate the attacking forwards from the puck, and communicate with his partner on defense. Cayden puts forth 100% effort during games and practice, and he is very coachable.

Zejun “Tommy” Li '20 – Thirds Basketball

Zejun came off the bench in both of our games last week and provided a spark on offense and defense, scoring in transition and stealing the ball several times. He's been a great teammate, and he works hard to improve every day.
