Athletes of the Week for April 26, 2026

Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to Carlos Xie ’26 and Kevin Yang ’26 for earning Cardigan’s Student-Athlete of the Week Awards. Read what their coaches have to say about them below, and meet all the students who were nominated.

Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Carlos Xie ’26 - Varsity Tennis

Carlos has been an integral member of the team this year, consistently demonstrating both skill and versatility. He has excelled in singles competition, maintaining an undefeated record to date, while also willingly stepping into doubles matches when the team needs to secure critical points. He distinguishes himself through his strategic approach to the game. His exceptional ball placement, combined with remarkable patience and composure, allows him to control the tempo of matches and apply sustained pressure on his opponents. This disciplined style often forces errors and ultimately leads to his success on the court. Beyond his individual achievements, Carlos’s adaptability and team-first mindset make him an invaluable asset to the program.

Sub-Varsity Student-Athlete of the Week

Kevin Yang ’26 - Thirds Baseball

Kevin has earned Student-Athlete of the Week recognition not just because of his leadership as the team’s captain, but also because of the energy and positivity he brings to practices. Even during a week without games, he made a meaningful impact by keeping spirits high and ensuring we stayed engaged and connected. He consistently brought a sense of fun and enthusiasm to practices, creating an environment in which his teammates felt encouraged to step outside their comfort zones. For example, he encouraged several players to try pitching for the first time, helping them build confidence while strengthening the team as a whole. His leadership goes beyond performance; he sets the tone with his attitude, inclusivity, and ability to bring out the best in others. His positivity and commitment to his teammates make him truly deserving of this recognition.

Other Varsity Nominations

Mitch Ricard ’26 - Varsity Baseball

Mitch had a big week this week, with five hits and three RBIs in our last two games, including two doubles. He is tied for the team lead in hits, and leads the team with 14 RBIs and a .600 batting average.

Luke Elsinger ’26 - Varsity Lacrosse

Luke has been giving it his all throughout the season. He is someone the team leans on to score when we need it. He is also a strong leader on and off the field and is always positive and kind to his teammates. Although the team came up short in two games last week, Luke stepped up, keeping a positive attitude and leading us in goals. In our JV/Varsity Green & White scrimmage during Spring Family Weekend, he was sidelined with a back issue but still worked hard, coaching and encouraging others. Keep up the great work, Luke!

Other Sub-Varsity Nominations

Liam Tith ’27 - Thirds Tennis

Liam has demonstrated what it means to be a true leader on and off the tennis courts. He is doing an outstanding job leading the team as the captain, and his dedication to improving every single day has set a new standard for the team. Way to go, Liam! Keep up your good work.

Maxwell Gu ’27 - JV Tennis

We nominate Maxwell for his vast improvement in doubles play, going 6-1 on the season thus far, and developing incredible consistency and power on his groundstrokes in the most recent practice.

Charlie Costello ’26 - Reserve Tennis

We nominate Charlie for his outstanding effort during practice. He has been a selfless and supportive captain, often joining teammates who are assigned extra laps during warm-ups. He is also a great help to the coaches––assisting with attendance, organizing teammates for practice, and consistently communicating any updates or changes.

Fernando Martinez ’27 - Thirds Lacrosse

Fernando has been a dedicated and hardworking member of our team all season. He stays focussed every day during practice, always gives his best effort, and leads by example with his attitude and determination. He plays an important role as our faceoff guy, consistently winning key faceoffs and giving our team valuable possessions throughout the game. His commitment, positive attitude, and strong work ethic make him a valuable member of our lacrosse program.

Jayden Hwang ’28 - Fourths Tennis

In a recent match at Tilton, Jayden played a student who was much older, bigger, and physically imposing. In addition, the Tilton player was supported by loud, cheering students. Jayden lost the first three games but then overcame the distractions and intimidation, finishing with a dominating 8-4 win.

Omar Kuri ’27 - JV Baseball

Omar has shown major improvement in just the first few weeks. He has contributed to our games and wins with some big at-bats as well as several key plays in the field.

Gavin Donelan ’26 - JV Lacrosse

Gavin has been consistent and steadfast in his approach to the game and his captaincy. He is always the vocal leader who helps set the tone for the entire team. Defenders across the league do not want him to find time and room, because more often than not, he buries the ball with his accuracy and power. We have all enjoyed getting to see him grow into his role on the field and know he is poised for great lacrosse success here at Cardigan and beyond.

Aiden Ban ’28 - Reserve Lacrosse

Aiden has been dominating the attack position on our team. His courage and grit are admirable, and he contributes as a tone-setter to games and practices. He is a dedicated player both on and off the field. In practice, he is always trying new things, pushing himself, and finding positive results.
