Athletics

Known as the Cougars, Cardigan athletic teams foster sportsmanship, teamwork, and School pride. We support multiple teams in 17 sports to meet the interests and develop the skills of all Cardigan student-athletes. Every boy has the opportunity to play, learn, and have fun.

We believe in the benefits of the multi-sport athlete, while at the same time supporting skill development for the student in his core sport. Students may also choose to participate in noncompetitive activities in order to develop fitness and physical skills in the pursuit of a well-rounded education in mind, body, and spirit.

Our coaches teach the value of teamwork, fair play, and hard work. A healthy athletic environment is inclusive, that every member of a team is equally important, and that the athletic experience should be fun for all players, coaches, and spectators.

Sportsmanship

At Cardigan, we believe sportsmanship is an essential component of interscholastic athletics. Our student-athletes, coaches, officials, and fans demonstrate sportsmanship by following the Cardigan Core Values of compassion, integrity, respect, and courage. We encourage all participants to enthusiastically support their team, recognize outstanding performance of opponents, and always exhibit good sportsmanship in their words and actions.

Johnson-Wakely Fitness Center

Built in 2013, the beautiful Johnson-Wakely Fitness Center is a modern athletic training facility featuring the latest technology in fitness equipment, cardiovascular training equipment, and free weights.

One of things we know is that middle school boys need to be active, so part of their education is athletic education. A lot of the boys come with a sport of hockey or lacrosse or skiing that they feel is an important part of their identity. We want to honor that, and we want to do it the right way.

Recent Scores

vs.
Eaglebrook
Loss 0-2

The Cougars dropped a close one to their arch rivals Eaglebrook by a score of 2-0. It was a well-pitched defensive battle. Elliott Watson did a great job on the mound for the Cougars, pitching 5 innings, only allowing three hits, and striking out five batters. Quinn Suarez came in for relief and was able to keep Eaglebrook off the scoreboard in his 2 innings of work, giving the Cardigan bats a chance at the plate. The green and white were actually able to out-hit Eaglebrook with the hits 5 to 4 respectively, but unfortunately, too many strikeouts were the difference maker.

vs.
KUA
Loss 5-9

Cardigan traveled to nearby Meriden, New Hampshire for their second game in two days against the KUA Wildcats. KUA scored the game's first six goals before the Cougars finally broke through, and then scored one more before halftime to make the score 7-1. In the second half, Cardigan played its strongest half to date, tying the third quarter 2-2 and then scoring the final two goals of the game in the fourth quarter to make the final 9-5. Fede Lujan led the Cougars with two goals and one assist, while Watts Ooten, Sam Hunt, and Stevie Wales each had single tallies. Will Ahn added an assist.

vs.
Eaglebrook
Loss

Ytuarte '25 & Jhao '24 won their doubles and Diallo '24, C. Xie '26, and Yang '26 all won singles, but the Cougars dropped the match to EBS. It was cool and rainy, so we played in Turner. It was a fun day of close competition.

vs.
Proctor Academy
Loss 1-10

On a cool April afternoon, the Cardigan Cougars were stung by the Proctor Hornets 10-1. Despite having few possessions, the Cougars played strong defense in the first quarter, falling behind 2-0. In the second quarter, several turnovers led to long offensive possessions for the Hornets, who scored six goals in the period to take a 8-0 lead into the second half. Cardigan regrouped at halftime, tying the third quarter 1-1 on a Gavin Wilmot goal off a nice pass from Stevie Wales. Proctor scored the only goal in the fourth quarter to make the final 10-1. John Stadler played a strong physical game defensively, and Chun Cheung continued to show improvement in goal, making numerous saves.

vs.
Holderness
Win

The Cougars traveled to Plymouth, New Hampshire for a match against the Blue Bulls of Holderness School. The Cougars were dominant in improving its season record to 2 – 0 in Lakes Region League competition, 3 – 1 overall. Once again, the Cougars number one singles, Tanglertsumphun , played a scrappy Blue Bull player who came from behind in the second set. Tanglertsumphun prevailed handily in the second set tie-break, notching the win. The rest of the singles players won their matches handily: Calabro (6-2,6-1), Park (6-2,6-1),

Smith (6-3, 6-4), Gerbut (6-2,6-0), Lo (6-3,6-4). The number one tandem of Tanglertsumphun and Calabro came from behind to force a tie-breaker which featured long and exciting rallies and well-placed volleys (8-7, 7-3 TB). The newly formed number two doubles of Colin and Park won decisively (8-2). Burnett and Zhu at number three doubles performed brilliantly winning their match (8-2). In exhibition matches, Zhu and Sun won in singles, and the pair of Liu and Sun, despite numerous unforced errors, prevailed in doubles.

Our next match is against the Eagles of Eaglebrook School, fielding a perennially strong team.
