Cardigan’s First International Student

Cardigan was beginning its second year when the school welcomed Guillermo Arguello ’48 as our first international student. Arguello (shown second from left in his senior class picture) hailed from Nicaragua, where his father was a lawyer with the United Nations. 

While Arguello attended Cardigan only for his ninth grade year, he was an enthusiastic member of the school community who “enters into everything that comes along.” According to founder Hap Hinman: 

During the recent cold spell while some Northern-bred kids wore an undershirt, 2 woolen shirts and a jacket, Bill seemed to swelter in a light cotton sport shirt, open neck and short sleeves—he says that he can hardly wait for ‘snow to come up to my chin.’
