Center for Exploration

Center for Exploration

Along with endowed fund initiatives, a current priority of the Campaign for Cardigan 2020 is the construction of an innovative Center for Exploration, designed to house the visual arts as well as courses centered on experiential learning, design and experimentation, and collaboration. The additional academic space will have positive cascading impact on Cardigan’s entire academic program, as all classes will be centered around a new “academic quad” and existing academic spaces will be repurposed according to curricular needs. The resulting department and classroom adjacencies will remove constraints to course and scheduling design, and enable faculty members to infuse collaborative, active learning opportunities throughout the curriculum.

"A new opportunity that challenges Cardigan to build for the future, and will have transformational effects in all corners of the campus."
—Head of School Christopher Day P’12,’13

Educational benefits of the proposed Center for Exploration:

  • An exemplary learning space mirrors our educational philosophy: to take risks and learn from every mistake.
  • Areas for collaboration and exploration complement spaces with natural affinities: Gates Lab, Williams Woodshop, E.P.I.C. Center, and digital and visual arts.
  • A visionary project that has immediate and cascading impact: evolution of curriculum, reimagining of existing classrooms, and the establishment of an academic quad at the heart of Cardigan’s campus.
