MLK Day Program Has Powerful Impact 1/20/2012
At Cardigan we have not forgotten, and won’t ever forget, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his important work for the Civil Rights Movement. Nor will we forget the significance of the values upheld, and the moral courage displayed, during that time in our country’s history—values regarding human dignity (and the courage to stand up for it) that can be applied across cultures, races, religions, and nations.
Preceding this morning’s special MLK Day programming was the viewing, by grade, of four different powerful films on Wednesday evening. Sixth graders watched The Great Debaters; members of the seventh grade viewed Glory; eighth-grade students saw Hotel Rwanda; and ninth-grade boys took in Crash. (If you haven’t seen these films, you may find them well worth your while!) A slight morning sleep-in today seemed just the ticket to bringing particularly alert minds to a poignant all-school assembly and presentation, followed by student-facilitated discussion groups. After an earlier-than-usual lunch this afternoon, the boys then headed off in groups, by dorm, for community service work. (Kudos to Mr. Hannis for the MLK program planning and to Mr. Sinclair for organizing the service piece!)
