A Shakespearian Classic Comes to Cardigan’s Stage
Date: 11/02/2018

Students rehearsingThe Cardigan Mountain Players are rehearsing for their upcoming production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. The play, originally written in 1610, combines elements of mystery, romance, comedy, music, and dancing. It is considered to be Shakespeare’s best work of theater, and believed to be the last play he wrote alone. The Tempest is set on a remote island, inhabited by a usurped duke named Prospero, his daughter Miranda, a fairy named Ariel, and a half-human creature named Caliban. Prospero uses magic to conjure a storm to bring his brother and his cohorts to the island, with magical and fantastic results.

Cardigan’s production highlights some of the great work done by the students in Set Building Club, who constructed a multi-level platform set for the performance. For the first time during a Cardigan production, the performance will feature the use of puppetry, allowing our students to explore a new element of theatricality.

Jeff Good, Cardigan’s theater arts teacher and director of the production, is excited to bring this classic tale of shipwreck and magic to Humann Theatre. “This has been a really fun show to work on with the boys,” says Mr. Good. “It’s filled with supernatural elements and themes, and I almost hate to see it come to an end. I’m sure the audience will enjoy the production.”

Students rehearsingMark your calendars for two performances of Cardigan’s production of The Tempest. The public is invited on Thursday, November 15, and the Cardigan community will attend Friday, November 16. Both performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free.
